STATE PARKS IN SOUTHWEST TENNESSEE

Big Hill Pond State Park - McNairy County

On State Hwy. 57, located on the junction of the Tuscumbia and Hatchie State Scenic Rivers. The 4,218-acre park features the Travis McNatt Fishing Lake, a cypress-lined pond created during levy construction for the Memphis-Charleston Railroad line, a boardwalk trail leading into a wetlands area, campsites, backpacking trails, picnic sites and a visitors center.

Chickasaw State Park - Chester County

On U.S. Hwy. 100, this 14,400-acre park and forest was once part of a vast area belonging to the Chickasaw Nation prior to the Jackson Purchase of 1818.  Numerous miles of fire roads and trails wind through the scenic timberlands which embraces Lake Placid. The park offers 12 vacation cottages, 110 camping sites, a completely equipped lodge for up to 40 persons, hiking trail, tennis courts, basketball courts, archery range, badminton court, horseshoe pits, lighted ball field, playground, volleyball court and horseback riding in the summer. Open daily, lodge is open April through October.

Natchez Trace State Park - Henderson County

On I-40. Named for the western alternative route of the famous Nashville-to-Natchez, Miss. trail of the 18th and 19th centuries. The park includes Pin Oak and Cub Lake units which encompass 14,073-acres within the 48,000-acre Natchez Trace State Forest, Tennessee’s largest state forest. Along with the scenic woodlands, the park offers four lakes, 45 miles of hiking trails, a wrangler camp, inn, restaurant, and cabins.

Pickwick Landing State Resort Park - Hardin County

On State Hwy. 57 at Pickwick Dam. This 1,392-acre park on the shores of Pickwick Reservoir offers a full-service marina, three public boat ramps, a 119-room inn and restaurant with conference and meeting facilities, 10 cabins, and an 18-hole championship golf course.

Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park - Madison County

Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Area consists of at least 15 earthen mounds, a geometric enclosure and habitation areas that encompass over 1,100 acres. It is the largest Middle Woodland period mound complex in the Southeast. Facilities include a museum designed to replicate a mound with displays, videos and interpretive programs. Picnic shelters, playground, six miles of hiking trails with a boardwalk along the Forked Deer River and a 32-person group camp for overnight stay. Park grounds open until dusk daily. Museum hours are: Mon.-Sat. 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Sun. 1-5 p.m.

BROWNSVILLE

Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge

Located only four miles south of Brownsville on U. S. Hwy. 76 are 11,556-acres of the Hatchie Scenic River that comprise the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge. It offers nature at its best with nine natural oxbow lakes, as well as a man-made lake for fishing, more than 200 species of birds, about 50 mammals and a myriad of reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates.

JACKSON


Cypress Grove Nature Park

Established in 1984 to preserve part of Jackson’s natural river bottom habitat, Cypress Grove consists of 165 acres of Cypress forest and features trails, more than two miles of elevated boardwalk, a pond and a lake, home to various mammals, frogs, fish, turtles and more than 175 species of birds. The site also features the Aerie Trail Raptor Center, a haven for birds of prey that have been injured and cannot survive on their own in the wild. Restrooms and picnic facilities. Free admission. Open daily Nov.-March 8 a.m.-5 p.m., April-Oct. 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Group reservations accepted.

Lake Graham

575-acre man-made lake, operated by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, features small boats & fishing from boat, bank, or pier. Swimming or water skiing are not allowed. Bait, tackle, boat rentals, fishing pier, picnic area, and boat ramps are all available.

 

Liberty Garden

Located at the corner of Stonebridge and Channing Way in North Jackson; (731) 425-8227.  Liberty Garden was created as a memorial to September 11, 2001.  It is a passive park with a 1/2 acre walking trail, gazebo, picnic tables, garden benches and plenty of green space for creative play.  Points of interest include Freedom Plaza which includes a Freedom Shrine (30 Historical American documents), a Veteran’s Memorial Wall for Madison County Fallen Soldiers (Beginning with WW I), a decorative, round, concrete replica of the Tennessee Flag, surrounded by a seating wall with accent landscaping to frame the Veteran’s Memorial Wall, and an arboretum marked with the trees’ scientific and common names.

 

LEXINGTON

Beech River Watershed

Encompasses six lakes providing a total of 3,000-acres of surface area and 100 miles of shoreline for recreational activities. Beech, Pine, Cedar, Redbud, Dogwood and Sycamore Lakes are open to the public for fishing, swimming, hunting in season, boating, camping, hiking and other related outdoor activities.

Eleven acre park located five miles east of Parsons on the beautiful Tennessee River. There are 56 tent or RV lots with electricity and water ($19 daily, senior rate of $15), 18 tent lots without electricity ($15 daily, senior rate of $11). Weekly and monthly rates also available. Park includes picnic pavilions. boat rentals, two boat ramps, camping store, basketball court, restroom facilities with showers, and a dump station. Open year round.

Ranked as one of the top bass fishing spots in the U.S., Pickwick is renowned for its smallmouth and largemouth catches. Other sport fish include catfish, sauger, crappie, white bass, striped bass, spotted bass, and bluegill. Several guide services are available. Pickwick is also well known for its water recreation opportunities such as skiing, boating, canoeing, swimming and lake front camping.

Open year round. Joy-O R. V. Park is located 11 miles west of Jackson on I-40 and Hwy. 138 Exit 68, go south on Hwy. 138 for 100 yards and turn left at the Joy-O Park Entrance Sign. If you are heading Hwy. 70 West turn right and go 3/4 mile and turn right at the entrance sign. The park has 20 pull-thru sites with electric, water and sewage; 10 back in spaces with electric and water; and 10 tent sites. Bath house and laundry open all night. Swimming pool open May 31st until Labor Day. All sites have shade and grass patios. Also available is an open field for sports, a meeting room for gatherings and telephone hookups at some sites. Grocery store and restaurant in walking distance.

The fifth in a series of Jack Nicklaus designed courses located in the state of Tennessee, Ross Creek Landing is an 18-hole, par 72 course that measures more than 7000 yards from the back tees. The course offers a variety of wooded and meadow golf holes. Oak, Hickory, Hackberry, Cedar and even some Cypress line the fairways. Open daily.

DECATURVILLE

Set in the rolling terrain on the banks of the Tennessee River, the layout provides a unique challenge for the average to scratch golfer. Highland Green Golf Course

Located just north of I-40 Exit 82B, Highland Green Golf Course is a beginner friendly yet challenging nine hole golf course that includes a lighted driving range, a clubhouse, a snack bar, and a fully stocked pro shop that carries a full line of men’s and women’s equipment and apparel.

Woodland Hills Golf & Country Club

Located just off Highway 45 South of Jackson, Woodland Hills Golf & Country Club was designed by Bobby J. Martin and features 6,390 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72 .  The course rating is 70.8 and it has a slope rating of 125 on Bent grass.

PICKWICK DAM
 
Pickwick Landing State Park Golf Course

Located close to the border of Mississippi and Alabama within the proximity of Pickwick Dam, this course opened in May of 1973 and is a favorite of the locals as well as destination golfers. Golf Digest has awarded this facility "Three Stars" in the Places to Play category. Hole #2, a tight dogleg right Par 4, 396 yards, is the Signature Hole with out of bounds protecting the entire right side of the fairway. Every hole is tree-lined, out of bounds guards eleven holes and water is found on eight holes. There are a total of twenty-one bunkers found throughout the course. Driving Range, Practice Green, On Site Lodging, Snack Bar, Club Rental. Lessons Available. Tee times required 7 days a week. Open 7 days a week, closed on Christmas Day.

SAULSBURY


Grand Valley Golf Club

USGA rated championship golf course, 18 holes with a pro shop, putting green and large driving range located in the heart of Hardeman County within the gated retirement community of Grand Valley Lakes.  This golf course with tree lined Bermuda fairways, Bent Grass Greens and 38 bunkers is rated 3 ½ stars by Golf Digest.  It can be playable and enjoyable for beginners, ladies and seniors, yet a challenge for low handicappers.  It has 5 sets of tees with slope ratings from 67.3 to 73.5.  Open to the public Tuesday – Sunday.  An 18 hole disc golf course is also being developed in 2010 along the perimeters of this scenic 175 acre golf course.
