6th Annual Reelfoot Lake Eagle Festival; Reelfoot Lake State Park Visitor Center Hwy. 21/ 22; Lake County - Come out and join a wintry fun-filled family weekend on Reelfoot Lake. Annual Parker’s Crossroads Battleground Memorial Lantern Walk - Sponsored by the Parkers Crossroads Battlefield Association. Starting at dusk, guides will lead groups on lantern lighted walks through the battlefield with volunteers portraying soldiers and civilians sharing stories taken from the letters and diaries of the period.  The 40 minute walk will start at tour stop 7 which is located south of I-40.  Turn east onto Federal Lane traveling approximately 1/4 mile to the battlefield parking area. Park Day at Shiloh Battlefield; Shiloh National Military Park; Shiloh (Hardin County) - Volunteers needed for Civil War Preservation Trust Annual Park Day 2010. This year`s project will allow volunteers to help restore historic commemorative features on the battlefield. Volunteers will help repaint and restore several nearly 110 year old cast-iron troop position markers and original artillery pieces on the battlefield. Casey Jones Day; Casey Jones Home & Railroad Museum; Jackson (Madison County) – Casey Jones' famous last ride took place 110 years ago on April 30th, 1900.  Heading toward Vaughan, Mississippi on his new route from Memphis, Jones, a railroad engineer for Illinois Central, heroically stayed with his passenger train in the now legendary train collision when another train stalled on the track ahead.  He saved the lives of all of his crew and passengers on board and his was the only life lost. An African-American engine wiper, Wallace Saunders, set Jones' deeds to song and the eventual "Ballad of Casey Jones" made Casey Jones a world wide folk hero and legend. CANCELLED DUE TO FLOODING -"Forrest's First West Tennessee Campaign - December 1862," Parkers Crossroads City Park; Parkers Crossroads (Henderson County) – The Parkers Crossroads Battlefield Association and Humanities Tennessee are pleased to sponsor a lecture and discussion featuring Dr. Lonnie E. Maness. The lecture will detail General Nathan Bedford Forrest's foray into west Tennessee and it being the forerunner of what became known in World War II as "blitzkrieg," or lightening warfare.  Forrest's cavalry concentrated its attack on selected targets and moved rapidly behind enemy lines to confound and avoid major confrontations with large hostile forces.  Dr. Maness will utilize his extensive knowledge in discussing this campaign into western Tennessee and Kentucky.  Immediately following the lecture, State Representative and battlefield historian Steve McDaniel will host a short walking tour of the battlefield, highlighting locations significant to the battle.  The event, free to the public, is scheduled for  2:00 p.m. in the Activities Building.  For more information, contact the Parkers Crossroads Visitors Center at 731-968-1191.

Memorial Weekend Activities at Shiloh National Military Park (Hardin County) – A weekend of special events and commemorative activities will begin on Saturday, May 29, and continue through the afternoon on Monday, May 31.  From 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, costumed interpreters will present programs on the front lawn of the Shiloh Visitor Center.  These living historians will interpret wars in which the United States has participated, including the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, and the recent war in Iraq.  There will be a live firing of the strikingly different shoulder firearms available from the different wars each day at 11:00 a.m., and 2:00 p.m., so the public will be able to view the progression of the firearms from past to present.  Local members of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association will display antique military vehicles on the front lawn of the Visitor Center.  The vehicles will includes a World War II halftrack, a ¾ ton Dodge weapons carrier from the Korean War, World War II jeeps, World War II 37 mm cannon, and a World War II 57 mm cannon.  A program titled “Spotlight on America’s Veterans” is scheduled at the Shiloh Visitor Center immediately following the conclusion of the memorial service.  This one-hour presentation will highlight the military experiences of Iraq veteran, Steven Pond.  In addition, there will be a memorial service held at automobile tour stop #5, location of one of the five known mass Confederate burial sites on the battlefield.  The ceremony will recognize the military service of the Confederate soldiers engaged in the Battle of Shiloh.  The public is invited to attend the program, which will begin thirty minutes after the conclusion of the memorial service inside Shiloh National Cemetery.  In addition, park rangers will present the following interpretive programs on Monday afternoon:1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. – Infantry:  Backbone of the Army – A park ranger, dressed in period Civil War uniform, describes the experiences of the common soldier, and concludes with a black powder rifled musket firing demonstration.  2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. -- Garden of Stone:  Shiloh National Cemetery – Program includes a 200 yard walking tour through peaceful Shiloh National Cemetery interpreting features and stories associated with the interred soldiers.  Those planning to attend the Memorial Day services are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to provide comfortable seating during the ceremonies.  For further information concerning the schedule of events being conducted at Shiloh Battlefield throughout the Memorial Day weekend, please contact the park at 731-689-5696, or visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/shil.

Artillery Demonstrations at Shiloh; Shiloh National Military Park; Shiloh (Hardin County) - On Saturday June 19th and Sunday June 20th, members of Selden`s Alabama Battery and Tarrant`s Alabama Battery will be presenting living history demonstrations. The original artillery batteries fought side-by-side in such Civil War battles as Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Franklin, and Nashville. In order to provide the public an idea of how artillery would have functioned during Civil War battles, the men will fire two 12 pounder Napoleons, demonstrating the correct firing procedures. Along with the loading and firing of the black-powder Civil War artillery, a period camp will be set up for the public to visit. The camp will consist of tents and equipage used by the common soldiers. Visitors are welcome to visit the camp and talk to the reenactors to learn more about the western, volunteer soldier in the Civil War. The demonstrations will be presented at Ruggles` Battery, on the automobile tour route. The demonstration times, excluding any unforeseen problems, will be as follows. Junior Ranger Day; Shiloh National Military Park; Hardin County - Park Rangers at Shiloh Battlefield will offer a number of hands-on activities for children from the ages 9 to 12, such as the “School of the Soldier,” during which visitors will use toy rifles to learn different Civil War marching drills, as well as the nine steps required to load and fire a Civil War musket. Rangers will lead the children on a walk through the woods where they will learn about the different trees of Shiloh, and participate in a relay race in which they will utilize their learning skills of leaf identification. The morning activities will conclude with a hike through the Shiloh Indian Mounds National Historic Landmark where children will learn about the Native Americans who once inhabited this pristine area, and participate in games similar to the ones the Native American children would have played. Participation is by registration as the program can only accommodate 40 children. Registered children will participate in the activities noted above from 9:00 AM until 12:30 PM. Each child will need to wear clothing appropriate for outdoor physical activities, such as, hiking boots, tennis shoes, hats, and sun block.
